Abbiamo incontrato Mick McCullagh (chitarra), Matt Avery (basso) e Sean Seabrook (voce) dei Bigfoot prima del loro concerto a Milano al Legend Club lo scorso 23 settembre. In questa simpatica intervista emerge l’entusiasmo e un briciolo di pazzia dei ragazzi di Wigam, Inghilterra.

Bentornati su Long Live Rock’n’Roll, come state?
Mick: Stiamo bene, è bello rivederti. E’ bello essere di nuovo a Milano, l’ultima volta ci siamo stati ad Aprile, il tempo era bello anche allora come oggi e ne stiamo approfittando.
Matt: Oggi è addirittura piùcaldo! Si suda molto!
Mick: Oggi fa molto piùcaldo, sì.
Sì, dovrebbe essere autunno qui ma è ancora estate…
Mick: “Fall”? Ah intendi autunno!
Sì, ho usato la parola americana.
Dall’ultima volta che ci siamo sentiti c’è stato un cambio nella line-up quindi possiamo partire da lì. Cos’è successo?
Mick: Ok allora il cantante originario purtroppo ha lasciato la band per motivi che non sto qui a dire, è piuttosto personale, perciò abbiamo iniziato a fare audizioni, abbiamo messo un annuncio e abbiamo ricevuto circa 200 candidature, molto piùdi quanto ci aspettassimo. Ci è voluto molto tempo, stavamo seduti mangiando pizza e bevendo birra, le audizioni sono piùo meno così, ci siamo imbattuti in Sean, questo ragazzo qui e lui è fantastico, ha cantato alcune parti ed è venuto a Wigham, che è da dove veniamo, vicino Manchester, per una vera audizione con la band e ci ha colpiti. Suonava meraviglioso perciò eravamo tutti “Yeah!”.
Sean puoi descriverti brevemente, qualcosa su di te prima dei Bigfoot e le tue prime esperienze con la band.
Sean: Ok, mi chiamo Sean Seabrook, canto da circa dieci anni, prima ero in una band chiamata Switchblade City, non abbiamo mai fatto dei tour europei, solo tanti concerti su e giùper il regno Unito e abbiamo anche aperto per i Bigfoot a Nottingham che è come ho conosciuto la band, ho incontrato i ragazzi e quando ho visto l’annuncio ero seduto a casa, sorseggiando una birra e mi sono detto “Potrei anche io!” così ho mandato la candidatura, qualche video di me che canto e ho schiacciato invio, gli sono piaciuto e a me è piaciuto cantare con loro e le cose sono andate benissimo, i ragazzi sono fantastici, dei gran musicisti, musicisti fantastici e quando li conosci davvero sono dei cazzoni!
Matt: Posso confermarlo! E’ la sua prima esperienza con i Bigfoot, un tour europeo, quindi ha la possibilità di vedere tutta la gloria che implica un tour in giro per l’Europa o in qualsiasi altro posto.
Sean: Sì ho visto piùpelle maschile di quanto immaginassi! (ride). Fino ad ora è stato fantastico e davvero non vedo l’ora per i prossimi concerti e tour, trascorrere molto tempo on the road con quattro dei migliori ragazzi con cui ho mai suonato musica ad essere onesto, solo la band stessa è come casa per me e non vedo l’ora per il futuro.
Mick: Il primo live che abbiamo fatto è stato proprio a Wigham, il warm up gig di questo tour, e già allora ci siamo sentiti bene, come se lo stessimo facendo da anni e sì, siamo emozionati, stanchi ma emozionati!
Normalmente il cantante è il biglietto da visita di una band, come pensate che questo cambiamento di line-up abbia inciso sulla band?
Mick: In modo molto positivo, estremamente positivo. Io penso che, senza troppi sforzi, sembra tutto piùdivertente ora, piùpositivo.
Sean: I ragazzi sembrano molto piùrilassati, glielo chiedo spesso perchè sono consapevole che non sono da molto nella band, mai stato in una band di questo calibro prima, tutti sembrano davvero molto piùrilassati, è tutto molto figo, secondo la mia prospettiva e da quello che ho visto.
Matt: E’ con noi solo da qualche settimana, c’è ancora tempo.
Come sta andando il tour? Qualche aneddoto divertente?
Mick: Troppi per un’intervista!
Sean: Facciamo uno a testa?
Mick, Matt: Sì.
Sean: Parto con il piùovvio, il nostro batterista Tom ha avuto accesso alla pagina facebook della band e di Mick tre volte in dieci giorni.
Mick: E’ un bastardo!
Sean: E ha tanti video divertenti e continua a scherzare e spaventarlo, è così divertente, uno degli highlights del tour, è stato fantastico.
Mick: Io vi parlo di ieri sera, ieri sera questo coglione stava dormendo nella stanza del nostro chitarrista Sam e del batterista, erano così infastiditi per il suo russare così lo hanno mandato via e lui si alza e va a dormire nella vasca da bagno, per lui “E’ normale amico”.
Matt: In realtà c’è una spiegazione logica per questo perchè è successo la scorsa notte che eravamo in Svizzera e faceva davvero caldo, non riuscivo a dormire bene, sudavo e russavo allo stesso tempo e visto che non riuscivo a dormire sono andato in bagno, mi sono seduto nella vasca da bagno ed era fresco e piacevole quindi mi sono detto “Resterò qui così anche se russo non mi sentono, mi faccio una bella dormita e non sudo”, due piccioni con una fava. Così ho dormito nella vasca da bagno e l’altra spiegazione logica è che è una bella storia da tour, sai, se fossimo solo cinque ragazzi che vanno in giro in un van, suonano, si fanno qualche birra e vanno a letto non avremmo storie da raccontare. Se sei in una band, sai, bisogna fare della buona musica ma devi anche avere delle storie divertenti da raccontare perché si basa tutto su questo.
Sean: Ho dimenticato la migliore! Posso un’altra?
Sì certo!
Sean: Tom ed io siamo usciti dopo i due concerti in Belgio, siamo usciti con una coppia di fan e ci siamo davvero molto, molto agitati. Nell’arco di un’ora stavamo tornando all’hotel, Tom cade fuori dalla lobby dell’hotel, sbatte la testa a terra, vomita per tutte le scale dell’hotel e scopriamo che i fan sono talmente ubriachi, una di loro sviene per terra, il marito che cerca di svegliarla e viene arrestato e gli viene puntata una pistola alla testa, tenevano una pistola contro di lui mentre cercava di svegliarla sul pavimento ma per fortuna è riuscito con google translate a dirgli “E’ mia moglie, è ubriaca”. Ci hanno fatto una multa di solo 50 euro per il vomito, voglio dire, non una scala ma dieci piani. Questo è successo in Belgio e non siamo ancora arrivati in Germania! Solo due giorni di tour!
Vi state già divertendo molto, potreste scrivere un libro!
Mick: Stasera è l’ultima sera del tour europeo, poi abbiamo numerosi show in UK.
Matt: Domani torniamo verso casa, viaggiamo verso la Francia domani e ci fermiamo per la notte e si torna in UK il giorno dopo.
E’ un lungo viaggio.
Mick: Sì ma abbiamo una X-box! Avevo il mio facebook ma il nostro batterista mi ha fatto cancellare…
Matt: Sì sai a facebook non piace quando posti una foto di un tizio con un pene enorme, ti rimuovono e bloccano per sette giorni, sette giorni senza facebook a causa di questo.
Mick: Torniamo alle domande.
Quali sono i piani dopo il tour? State lavorando al materiale per il prossimo album?
Matt: Certamente, speriamo di entrare in studio entro Novembre di quest’anno e iniziare a registrare il nuovo album, la maggior parte è scritta, perciò speriamo di avere le basi entro novembre come batteria e basso e poi aggiungere la voce e le chitarre e ovviamente una volta fatto dipende da Frontiers Records, la nostra etichetta, dipende da loro quando vogliono pubblicarlo, sì, questo è il piano dopo il tour, entrare in studio.
Quindi nel 2019…
Mick: Speriamo nel 2019, dipende dalla Frontiers ma sì, speriamo di iniziare a registrare a Novembre quindi in un paio di mesi.
E potete dirci qualcosa dell’esperienza al Frontiers rock festival?
Matt: Beh ci siamo stati nel 2015, poco prima che firmassimo, ci siamo andati per vedere le band che suonavano come Last In Line, Treat, Talisman con Jeff Scott Soto che era il nostro manager, abbiamo incontrato le persone che lavorano per Frontiers, abbiamo avuto una bella conversazione, abbiamo passato un bel weekend, poco dopo abbiamo firmato con loro, ci hanno mostrato un gran supporto, hanno spinto molto il disco uscito ad Ottobre dello scorso anno.
Mick: Questo ha portato la nostra musica in tutto il mondo perché prima era per lo piùUK, qualche fan in Germania e alcuni in Italia.
Oh stanno iniziando a suonare! Suonano bene ma state zitti! Hai altre domande?
Solo un paio. Non sto facendo domande sull’album perchè ne abbiamo parlato nella precedente intervista, quindi volevo chiedervi le principali influenze.
Mick: Alcune ovvie come Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, siamo fortemente influenzati dagli Eagles per le armonie vocali e sono stati alcuni dei pionieri ma ovviamente abbiamo influenze rock a cui vogliamo aggiungere qualcosa, cerchiamo un approccio nuovo e abbiamo diverse influenze, dovresti sentire la nostra playlist su Spotify, è tremenda. Madonna, Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, anche loro.
L’ultima domanda è cosa vi aspettate dal live di stasera e cosa dobbiamo aspettarci noi da voi.
Sean: La dominazione del mondo!
Matt: Siamo ancora nuovi in Italia quindi speriamo di fare una bella impressione.
Mick: E le ragazze!

Hello!
Welcome back to Long Live Rock’n’Roll”… how are you doing?
Mick: We’re doing great, great to see you again. It’s good to be back in Milano, last time we were here it was in April, the weather was good even then as it is today so we’re enjoying it so far.
Matt: Today is even hotter! Really sweaty!
Mick: Today it’s a lot warmer yes.
Yeah it’s supposed to be fall but still it’s summer here”…
Mick: Fall? Oh you mean autumn!
Yeah autumn, I said the American word.
Since the last time we spoke there has been a change in the line-up so we can maybe start from that. What happened?
Mick: Okay so the original singer unfortunately left the band for reasons that I don’t really wanna go and say here, it’s quite personal, so we started auditioning, we put an advert out and we had about 200 applicants which is a lot more than we expected. It took a long time, we were sitting down, eating pizza and drinking beer, which is more or less what auditioning is, we came across Sean, this guy here and he’s great, he sang a few parts and came down to Wigham, which is where we come from, near Manchester, for a proper audition with the band and he blew us away. It sounded awesome so we were like “Yeah!”.
And Sean can you briefly introduce yourself, something about you before Bigfoot and your first experiences with the band.
Sean: Okay, well my name is Sean Seabrook, I’ve been singing for about ten years, I was in a band before called Switchblade City, we didn’t do any like European Tours, we did quite a lot of gigs up and down the UK and we actually supported Bigfoot in Nottingham and that’s how I got to know the band so I met the guys and when I saw the advert I was actually sitting at home, sipping a few beers and I said “I might as well!” so I sent the application, a few videos of me singing, and pressed apply, they enjoyed me and I enjoyed singing with them and things just went very well, the guys are really great guys, great musicians, fantastic musicians, and when you really get to know them they’re all dicks.
Matt: I can confirm that! This is his first experience with Bigfoot, doing a European Tour, so he gets to see all the glory of what entails when it comes to tour around Europe or anywhere else.
Sean: Yeah I’ve seen more male skin than I could imagine! (laughs) So far it’s been fantastic and I really can’t wait for future gigs and touring, spending much time on the road as possible with four of the greatest guys I’ve been playing music with to be honest, just the band itself it feels like home to me, and I just cannot wait for the future.
Mick: The first gig we had was actually in Wigham, the warm up gig for this tour, and it just felt right then, like we’ve been doing this for years, yeah so we’re excited, tired but excited!
The singer is usually the business card of a band, how do you think this change in the line-up has affected the band?
Mick: Very positively, extremely positively. I think, not to go into any past endeavours, it just seems more fun now, more positive.
Sean: The guys seem a lot more relaxed, I ask them a lot as I’m conscious I haven’t been long in the band, in a band of this caliber ever before, everyone just seems a lot more relaxed, it just seems very cool, that’s from my perspective for what I’ve seen.
Matt: He’s only been with us for a few weeks, there’s still time yet.
How’s the tour going? Any funny story to tell?
Mick: Too many for an interview!
Sean: Should we do like one each?
Mick, Matt: Yeah.
Sean: I’ll go for the obvious one, our drummer Tom has got the band and Mick’s facebook accounts three times in ten days.
Mick: He’s an asshole!
Sean: And he’s got so many videos of him and he keeps pranking and scaring him, it’s so fun, it’s been one of the highlights of the tour, it’s just really been great.
Mick: This was last night actually, so last night this fucker he was sleeping in the room of our guitar player Sam and our drummer, they were so pissed off for his snoring so they sent him away so this guy gets up and sleeps in the bathtub, to him it was “This is normal man”.
Matt: There is actually a logical explanation for this because it was last night this happened and we were in Switzerland, it was very very hot and I wasn’t able to sleep properly so I was sweating and I was snoring at the same time so I couldn’t sleep so I went into the bathroom, I sat in the bathtub and it was nice and cold so I was like “I’m just gonna stay here so even if I snore they won’t hear it, I’ll have a goodnight sleep and I’m not sweating”, so two birds with one stone. So I slept in the bathtub and also the other logical explanation is it’s a good tour story, you know, if we were just five guys who were just going around in a van, playing a gig, have a few beers and went to bed it doesn’t really give a story to tell. If you’re in a band, you know, it’s good to make good music but you also need to have funny stories to tell because it’s all about that.
Sean: I forgot the best one! Can we have one more?
Yes of course!
Sean: Me and Tom went out after the two Belgian shows, me and Tom went out with two fans and got very, very, very pissed. In a space of about an hour we were coming back to the hotel, Tom falls out of the lobby of the hotel, smashes his head off the ground, throws up all over the stairs of the hotel and we found out we had our fans so drunk, one of our fans passed out on the floor, her husband tried to wake her up and got arrested and gun pointed, they were holding a gun to him ‘cause he was trying to wake her up from the floor but luckily he managed with google translate and say “This is my wife, she’s drunk” . We only got a 50 euro fine for throwing up, not one stair, I mean ten stairs. This all happened in Belgium and we haven’t hit Germany yet! This is two days into the tour!
You’re already having a lot of fun, you could write a book about it!
Mick: Tonight’s the last night of the European tour, we have massive gigs in the UK then.
Matt: We’re gonna travel back tomorrow, we’re on our way to France tomorrow and we’re staying overnight in France and then back to the UK the day after.
It’s a long trip.
Mick: Yeah it is but we got an X-box! I got my facebook but our drummer got me deleted so…
Matt: Yeah I mean facebook doesn’t like when you post a picture of a guy with a huge dick, they take off and bann you for seven days, seven days without facebook because of that.
Mick: Let’s go back to the questions.
What are the future plans after the tour? Are you working on new material for the next album?
Matt: Of course we are, we are hoping to go into the studio by November this year and start recording the new album, the majority of it is written, so we’re hoping that by November we got the basics and like the drums and bass and then add the vocals and guitars and obviously when we’ve got that done then it’s up to Frontiers Records, our record label, it’s up to them when they want it to be released, yeah that’s the plan after the tour, just go into the studio.
So it’s gonna be sometimes in 2019…
Hopefully sometimes in 2019, it depends on Frontiers but yeah we’re hoping to start recording in November so in a couple of months.
And can you tell us something about the experience at Frontiers rock festival?
Matt: Well we actually went in 2015, it was shortly before we got signed so we went there to watch the bands that were playing there like Last In Line, Treat, Talisman with Jeff Scott Soto who was our manager, we met with the people who worked for Frontiers, we had a great conversation, we had a good weekend, shortly after that we got signed with them, they’ve been showing great support, they’ve been pushing our record that came out in October last year.
Mick: So that brought our music all over the world ‘cause before it was mostly UK, some fans in Germany and a few fans in Italy .
Oh now the band is starting! It sounds great but shut the fuck up! Do you have any more questions?
Just a couple. I’m not asking questions about the album because we already talked about it in the previous interview, so I just wanted to ask you your main influences.
Mick: Some of the obvious ones, like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, we’re very influenced heavily by the Eagles because of the vocal harmonies and they were one of the pioneers but we obviously have rock influences but we want to bring something more to it, we’re trying a fresh approach to it and yes we’re influenced by a lot, you should listen to our playlist on Spotify, it’s terrible. Madonna, Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, these guys as well.
The last question is what do you expect from tonight’s show and what do we have to expect from you.
Sean: World domination!
Matt: We’re still new in Italy so what we can hope is to make a great impression.
Mick: And the ladies!
Matt: Well, priorities! We just want to make a great impression and hope that people have a good night watching us.
